Strangers in the land

More than four thousand years have passed since we heard of the story of a people displaced and their return into the land of promise. Since then things have evolved. However, strange things have set the tone for humanity to repeat the dark and dismal days of those unfortunate incidences. The moments in time when unrest and chaos ruled the nations in a world of turmoil and distress is upon us. No one seems to have recognized the trends that is leading us back to a place where tyrant once ruled. They were strangers in the land hoping for a new day and a new beginning. So many had hope for a brighter future apart from the hardship and turmoils they endured. Their displacement and feeling of despondency caused them to lose hope. The hope for a brighter tomorrow was clouded in despair. It seemed there was no way out of the traps which held them bound. However, as strangers they had a promise of new beginning.

As a people we have endured over four hundred years of slavery; the burden of injustice tried to break our spirit yet we live on. We were beaten and humiliated, families torn apart but just like dust we rose up from the trenches of anguish and despair; we bored the sorrow and pain hoping for change. Taken from the bottom of ships and sold to the highest bidder yet we live on. Where is the promise of sunshine, the light at the end of the tunnel? Those who profit from our misery are still enjoying the fruits of their ancestors while denying us a place and a purpose for us to grow unhindered. Time has crept up on us yet the dark voices of slavery is crying out from yonder graves; it’s a cry for freedom, a cry for a place we can turn to so that we will no more be strangers in the land of liberty a monument of hope placed on our shores. There are moments it seems we have cross the threshold of time but the cycle has never been broken and so we are here at the junction of injustice crying for mercy to capture us and set us free from the pain. Look at what we have done, look at where we are; we are at the precipice of extinction waiting to be rescued. We run for our lives from our tormentors yet shot from behind; dying in the streets and in the fields. Injustices rules a nation where color is the monopoly that determines who is right or who is wrong.

Time has past but we find ourselves where we started. They are placed in cages, in a holding cells ripped apart from their families, displaced in modern hell. Yet no one has the answers to where they are going. The turbulence of time and the moments of despair has returned to a people seeking refuge. They came to liberty but alas liberty is no more; it has closed it’s doors. The rulers of destiny has become inpassionate turning their back on those crying out for help. What or who have we become? Where has manifest destiny gone? Children are now living as strangers in the land not having an identity and no parents they can turn to. The story is too familiar; it is time we open up our eyes and see the similarities of the times. Are we creating an identity crisis just like times before when generations will be forever lost not knowing who they really are? Let those who are fighting to be elected put things into perspective and focus on reality of the moment rather than lining their pockets with wealth gathered from their empty promises. It’s time to stop the madness and have empathy for those who are strangers in the land.

This behavior is very similar to the times we were taken from our mother land. We were dispersed to every corner of the globe without compassion. Mothers lost their love ones, fathers lost their sons leaving us without an identity. We had no way to identifying who we really were, where we came from and the true roots of our ancestry. We were strangers in the land looking for a place to rest our weary souls. Although we have come this far, the question still remains: Are we heading for the mountaintop looking with anticipation hoping there’s sunshine when the dreams of tomorrow will bring a brighter day? Hate and violence is taking it tole while the flames of hate captures a nation led by an image made of Iron and Clay. Let’s put aside our indifferences and work towards the renewal of human dignity. Though the writing is on the wall, the interpretation can be words of success. It is time to live in peace and harmony instead of being “Strangers in the land!”

Opportunity

As we approach this season of fun and festivity, we look with grateful hearts to where we have been in life and how far we have come. It is a time to be thankful for all the blessings we have received in spite of the many challenges we faced. We must not forget the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices made that has helped to move us into a more secured environment where peace and love exist. Your aspiration should be to create opportunities where humanity can co-exist in harmony, peace and friendship.

I know that everyone is looking forward to being with family and friends. We will come in anticipation and expectation because many would be seeing their love ones; celebrating a reunion for the first time in a long while. This should be what this season is all about. However, we cannot ignore the opportunities this gathering presents. It will be a time for completeness, honesty, love and respect.  A time when social and economic barriers are broken down; the wall of neglect frustration and confusion moved out of its place and a new wave of freedom and opportunity is birth.

As simple as it might sound, oppertunity is any exploitable set of circumstances. However, these might not always bring the results perceived. When you encounter opportunity, it requires commitment, exposure and risk.  Don’t use the moment for exploitation! It is a time of uncertainty as a result of change in circumstances. It is a moment when you can be your best; giving back instead of receiving.

The time to be thankful is now. We use this moment every year to share. We can meet the need of those around us rising to the occasion to spread love and kindness remembering those less fortunate. Remember no man is an island we all depend on someone to propel us on to great exploits; we are always grateful for the opportunities that was given us.

We are our brother’s keeper therefore let us look out for each other while lending a hand and giving thanks to God for all of the benefits he has bestowed on us as individuals and as a nation. Let us look to the future with great anticipation as we seize the moment and the opportunity to be a blessing. Have a great season!

Just What Are You Saying?

It is incredible to think that for more than eight and a half billion years this universe has been in existence without us realizing that the environment has lost its most important elements and are now rotating in the wrong direction. It has fast become a myriad of social injustice and behavioral malfunction that causes the essence of belonging to overtake the vision for scientific advancement.  With this said, I am just trying to grab your attention to the effect of words spoken or words written. Thou it sound very sophisticated the question is, Just what am I saying?

Words are important; it is all we hear every day. We become over whelmed by what we hear; words have the power to create an environment that will change the course of history. Your words create impressions. It says something about the one speaking. It is often misunderstood, ridiculed and ignored; as a result it creates barrier to wholesome dialogs.

Words carefully chosen will do wonders: they will get folks caring about the things we care about, crying with emotions or laughing senselessly at jokes meant to cheer us up. The power of words can make us fall in love; soothe our aching hearts. Trades are made through contracts and persuasion. It is the way we reach out to those we target when we want to accomplish our goals. The power of words can build friendship or tear down emotions resulting in the creation of enemies; it can change the world and the course of history.

In light of this knowledge, have you ever asked yourself; just what am I saying? It is time to stop and think; it’s time to evaluate! The word says, “The power of life and death is in the tongue.” It is time to speak life not just to your neighbors but also to yourselves. Consider what you have said for the past year. Look at the result of what you have planted! Does it even bother you that what is happening in your life or relationship is a direct result of your own words? So I will ask once again: Just what are you saying?

I know this might be a strange topic to think about but it is something we all have to face every day. Remember the time when your confidence was at its peak? You spoke to yourself because you had a goal in mind; you could envision yourself accomplishing that goal. Why was it so? You spoke life into your situation and things happened. It might have surprised you but you spoke it and it came to pass. This was the power of words spoken.

Can I challenge you to think for a moment about the power of words? This world with all of its beauty was created with words. God said, Let there be light and it was so. He created this earth by speaking words and His words came to life and set things into motion. Similarly He has given us that ability to change our direction and to make a difference. Speak words of power over your situation and watch the result of the words you have spoken!

Do you remember that old adage: “Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can do me no harm?” Now that you have grown and reflect on the pass and what words have done: what do you think? Words create fear, anger, hurt and it makes you sad. Don’t be manipulated by words work through the clutter and speak over the voices of hurt and fears.

It is incredible what words will do. You can take control of your destiny just by transforming your vocabulary; change the quality of life which in turn affects your environment. Don’t be a sadder (I don’t know if there is such a word but just remember that I made it up) or you will make everyone sad. Be a joy and a lightning rod and watch a fire of delight burn around you and the ones you associates with.

Finally I will stir your mind to think of the situation of Joseph when he was in prison in Egypt. Because of the words of one who sought to control his destiny he was placed into the prison cell; he did not lose hope. He continued to dream of the day when he would be release however that day seemed far away. Through providence he spoke into the lives of his cell mates and was eventually forgotten. His words stood the test of time when one day it was his time to speak again. He spoke life into dead situation and was placed into the highest position of power in the land. Those who did not want to hear him came bowing and begging all because of the power of words.

Please do not fail to realize that words have the power to create and affect attitudes, behavior, and perception. Therefore I will say to, words have meaning, but it has no power unless the perceived mental state of an individual gives power to the words spoken and is being been heard. I will say sticks and stones can break my bones but words can do great harm! Speak words of life and watch as things and situations transform.

Is there anybody listening?

Not too long ago I started to think of the many trends and the overly excessive behavior that pervades our society; it causes me to contemplate with a deep sense of inner responsiveness towards the things that set in motion the things that are going on. I am confronted with the question; that unbearable voice filled with the emotions I heard so many times in the form of a song by a famous singer song writer; “What’s going on?” Are there any answers? Is there anybody listening? Though solemn, it is the cry for notability; a cry for justice, peace and satisfaction that often goes unnoticed until it is too late! This is a cry for help!

In my quest for answers I happened upon a song with the same theme. This draws me to look more closely at the lyrics, investigating the heartbeat of the ones who was so intense with passion; they too were left with the question seeking to find an answer.

Here are the words of the song which is a collaborative effort of Tate, Geoffrey W / Degarmo, Christopher.

“Long ago there was a dream, had to make a choice or two. Leaving all I loved behind, for what nobody knew, Stepped out on the stage, alive under lights and judging eyes. Now the applause has died and I can dream again.

Is there anybody listening? Is there anyone who smiles without a mask? What’s behind the words? Images, they know will please us I’ll take what’s real, bring up the lights. Is there anybody listening? Is there anyone that sees what’s going on? Read between the lines; criticize the words they’re selling.

Think for yourself and feel the walls become sand beneath your feet. You and I long to live like the wind upon the water. If we close our eyes, we’ll maybe realize there’s more to life than what we have known and I can’t believe, I’ve spent so long Living lies, I knew were wrong inside I’ve just begun to see the light.”

This is the twenty-first century yet just like the last and centuries before we are all asking the same questions hoping to get an answer. We have reached the moon and conquered space. We have made many advances in history but still we are at the same place! Laws are legislated and privileges have been taken away trying to make the society better through whatever means but the cry has not lessened, it is just the same. Is there anybody listening?

If you turn on the light does this sound familiar? Every day and everywhere questions have been asked but no one ever answer. Kids are succumbing to the act of bullying with cries for help but nobody is listening until it’s too late. Society is in a fix with trouble looming on every side. Gun violence is everywhere yet those who can do something to make a change  have been bought by wealthy capitalist. The poor and disenfranchised who give them their jobs have been the objects of rejection. The wealthy and famous; the rich and the poor all meet at the same place of despair with the same longing yearning and empty hearts. The question they all ask; is anybody listening?

Behind the many smiles and laughter lies the pain. It is too unbearable to stay; for some the solution though rear is the only way out of despair. No one wants to hurt any because the consequences are too hard to bear but the fact that remains; we all go along daily not noticing the scare the folks are facing. The question I am sure that prevails on their mind is one that is most prominent to most; is there anybody listening?

What is happening around us? What in the world is going on? It seems that there is no more need to be concern because it is happening so often. Have we returned to the dark ages where barbarians rule? You don’t have to answer the question but just take a deep breath and look at our society and listen to the news! Men and women boys and girls are crying out for attention but there is no one there to help. We may express our feeling through the lyrics of a song and we all can patronize but the question remains.

Why the violence; why the dysfunction? The cell is not the answer! In a civil society let us all lend a hand and put our heads together and listen then we will understand. Don’t look on with a scorn do something now! Let us save our brothers and sisters, our sons and daughters. Let them know that we are listening! Volunteer in your areas of expertise and be an example. Let them know that you are listening and that you care!

Decisions; is it yours to make?

When I was a child I thought as a child but when I became a man I put away childish things! This is what we were thought or expect to happen but it might not be always the case. I know that this is already a bit controversial. However I would like to play with your minds for a while and cause you to think seriously about this.

As a child you are controlled by your parents or guardians. We depend almost entirely on them for help in making the right decisions. When we go wrong they are there to correct us and help us to overcome difficulties. “But when we become men we put away childish things!”

As a man or let’s say, as a person we have to rely on ourselves to make the right choices. Sometimes this is not easy because we live in a turbulent society and are faced with so many challenges that distracts us; it is hard to do the right thing at times and stay focus.

We have a society that seem to have lost its morals and are determined to be its own judge and jury.  To be a part of a civil society we must come to grip with the law and ethics and other things that is around us. For instance, how do we as men stand up for ourselves in the midst of a society that seeks to control even the morals essence of human dignity? We have to become strong men in tough times!

Time is slipping away; we are being controlled by those who control the media and are setting the standard that seems to govern our society. Do you ever wonder why we have so much senseless crimes in our society? It is because of our moral decay! When those who are trusted with the responsibility to make a change decide to be silent, then the wheels of degradation and distress will continue to turn and it is anyone’s guess where the motor will stop next.

The question is: Decisions; is it yours to make?

When making a decision it is the choice between possible actions. With that decision is a choice; the selection between two or more objects. Decision making can be regarded as the mental processes resulting in the selection of a course of action among several alternative scenarios. Every decision-making process produces a final choice. The output can be an action or an opinion of choice. Some people will tell you I did not take part so I did not make any decision. To that I would say you are mistaken because even your silence produces result and often it is one that you will not like.

We often complain about the ills of our society; too many gun violence and murders and we say why someone doesn’t do something about it! Do you remember the last time you had the opportunity to make a difference? What did you do? Stand on the sideline and hope for the best? If we are going to help change our society we have to do so block by block one neighborhood at a time but we will have to make that decision to take part.

I often wonder why gang violence is so prevalent. What are the cause and the cure for such behavior! First what is a gang?

A gang is a group of recurrently associating individuals or close friends with identifiable leadership and internal organization, identifying with or claiming control over territory in a community, and engaging either individually or collectively in violent or other forms of illegal behavior. The fact as I have stated, these are decisions that have been made those decisions have produced evil consequences; we all have to live with them. The decision is ours to make and the time is now. Don’t be on the side-line and wait until it’s too late. The decision is your to make!

Just recently we heard of another innocent victim that killed. What is the reason you may ask! The thing is, Gang members typically have to prove their loyalty by committing acts such as theft or violence; this might be the cause for such innocent killings. Again I must state that the decisions are ours to make. We cannot be on the sideline and hope for the best. One day it might be too late and the effect might be staring you in the face with grief and pain leaving you with the question; why me?

Decision making regardless to whether you like to or not, it’s yours to make! It is critical that we make good decision. Gang leaders have to make critical decision. However wrong,  those who follow are subjected to his decision. Decision making is an essential leadership skill. Therefore learning how to make timely, well-considered decisions can lead your team to well-deserved success. If, however, you make poor decisions, your time as a leader will be brutally short.

As a leader you must have the leadership skills necessary to guide your team to success. How good is your leadership skill? First, are you willing to be led? If you are, then it will be easy to lead. This is critical in determining your style of leadership. Remember we are talking about decision-making! Therefore you have to understand how to handle power effectively.

I know that I can continue to state more facts of interest but I just want to stir your mind to stop and think. Yes! Decisions are your to make so stand up and be counted before it is too late!

The Power of Choice

When faced with the challenges of everyday, how do you make the choice that will be beneficial to you! We decide the path we take and the accomplishments we achieve. We have and are given the power of choice and the freedom to choose. Therefore we make the decisions and we will ultimately be responsible for the consequences.

The power of choice is a privilege that has been given by the Creator Himself. We seek to demonstrate that choice in many ways. Making such decision is not in any way an easy one. Many of us seek to make positive impact on our society by the way we live but  Media, Corporation, Communities and even Government seems to take control in many covert ways.

Corporation seeks to make positive impact on communities as part of their corporate responsibility. The Media is very influential and more often than not set the precedence for the direction that guides our future. Be that as it may we have to decide the level of influence that is allowed.

As individuals we have a part to play in setting forth the direction we are heading and who we impact along the way. Knowing the responsibilities we face, it is imperative that we be guided by the things we are passionate about. We have to ask ourselves, how do I we use the power of choice?

It is time we take control of our situation and make the right choices instead of leaving things to chance. Can you imagine going through life and allowing someone else to make our choices for us?  God gave man the power of choice from the time we were created. This choice is called free will. Just think of it, many folks are afraid to make choice because they are afraid they will make the wrong choices. Whichever way you might look at it you are making choices every day. I will say to anyone who is afraid, step out on faith and choose! Be responsible and make your own decision. You have the right to choose!

Choice is base on behavior therefore I will ask, whose behavior can you control? I know it seems real simple but the fact is we only give information to someone. How they use that information is the decision only they can control. It does not matter the course in life you take, please choose wisely. I know that we are bombarded every second of the day with decisions to make; sometime it will take a toll on our mental capacity. Take a minute relax and weigh the matter carefully. You will avert a world of disaster by making the right choices as your journey through life.
