Not too long ago I started to think of the many trends and the overly excessive behavior that pervades our society; it causes me to contemplate with a deep sense of inner responsiveness towards the things that set in motion the things that are going on. I am confronted with the question; that unbearable voice filled with the emotions I heard so many times in the form of a song by a famous singer song writer; “What’s going on?” Are there any answers? Is there anybody listening? Though solemn, it is the cry for notability; a cry for justice, peace and satisfaction that often goes unnoticed until it is too late! This is a cry for help!
In my quest for answers I happened upon a song with the same theme. This draws me to look more closely at the lyrics, investigating the heartbeat of the ones who was so intense with passion; they too were left with the question seeking to find an answer.
Here are the words of the song which is a collaborative effort of Tate, Geoffrey W / Degarmo, Christopher.
“Long ago there was a dream, had to make a choice or two. Leaving all I loved behind, for what nobody knew, Stepped out on the stage, alive under lights and judging eyes. Now the applause has died and I can dream again.
Is there anybody listening? Is there anyone who smiles without a mask? What’s behind the words? Images, they know will please us I’ll take what’s real, bring up the lights. Is there anybody listening? Is there anyone that sees what’s going on? Read between the lines; criticize the words they’re selling.
Think for yourself and feel the walls become sand beneath your feet. You and I long to live like the wind upon the water. If we close our eyes, we’ll maybe realize there’s more to life than what we have known and I can’t believe, I’ve spent so long Living lies, I knew were wrong inside I’ve just begun to see the light.”
This is the twenty-first century yet just like the last and centuries before we are all asking the same questions hoping to get an answer. We have reached the moon and conquered space. We have made many advances in history but still we are at the same place! Laws are legislated and privileges have been taken away trying to make the society better through whatever means but the cry has not lessened, it is just the same. Is there anybody listening?
If you turn on the light does this sound familiar? Every day and everywhere questions have been asked but no one ever answer. Kids are succumbing to the act of bullying with cries for help but nobody is listening until it’s too late. Society is in a fix with trouble looming on every side. Gun violence is everywhere yet those who can do something to make a change have been bought by wealthy capitalist. The poor and disenfranchised who give them their jobs have been the objects of rejection. The wealthy and famous; the rich and the poor all meet at the same place of despair with the same longing yearning and empty hearts. The question they all ask; is anybody listening?
Behind the many smiles and laughter lies the pain. It is too unbearable to stay; for some the solution though rear is the only way out of despair. No one wants to hurt any because the consequences are too hard to bear but the fact that remains; we all go along daily not noticing the scare the folks are facing. The question I am sure that prevails on their mind is one that is most prominent to most; is there anybody listening?
What is happening around us? What in the world is going on? It seems that there is no more need to be concern because it is happening so often. Have we returned to the dark ages where barbarians rule? You don’t have to answer the question but just take a deep breath and look at our society and listen to the news! Men and women boys and girls are crying out for attention but there is no one there to help. We may express our feeling through the lyrics of a song and we all can patronize but the question remains.
Why the violence; why the dysfunction? The cell is not the answer! In a civil society let us all lend a hand and put our heads together and listen then we will understand. Don’t look on with a scorn do something now! Let us save our brothers and sisters, our sons and daughters. Let them know that we are listening! Volunteer in your areas of expertise and be an example. Let them know that you are listening and that you care!
